Looking after your eyes
While there isn’t any one nutrient that can fully protect your vision, it seems as though certain nutrients working together can help keep your eyes in great shape. For example, a study by the US National Eye Institute found that supplementing people’s diets with nutrients like zinc, copper, beta-carotene and vitamins C and E reduced the risk of age-related macular degeneration. Best foods for eye health >>
Nutrients for visionÂ
Beta-carotene is a great nutrient to look out for, as our bodies convert it into vitamin A. This is vital for healthy vision. We particularly love including sea buckthorn in our routine for its eye-supporting effects. It contains beta-carotene and vitamins C and E, as well as other healthy nutrients such as omega-7.
Antioxidants for your eyes
Just like many other parts of your body, your eyes are susceptible to damage by free radicals. Luckily, eating a diet rich in antioxidants can help stop them in their tracks. Two types of antioxidant are particularly useful for eye health: lutein and zeaxanthin. Like beta-carotene, they belong to the carotenoid family, but your body does not convert them to vitamin A. However, they do still fight free radicals and also help your eyes by absorbing blue light. You can find them in leafy greens, broccoli, peas and corn.
