What are beta-glucans good for?

Several scientific studies show that beta-glucans from medicinal mushrooms such as reishi, lion’s mane and cordyceps can provoke an immune response.

As such, they may be a great option if you’re keen to support your natural immunity.

You may come across the term ‘beta-d-glucan’ while doing your research. This simply refers to a specific type which occurs in yeast and fungi.

Some other types are present in foods such as oats, barley, seaweed products and algae. However, these have a slightly different structure and properties to those found in fungi.

Beta-glucans and gut health

Beta-glucans are a natural prebiotic. While we humans can’t break them down, the beneficial bacteria living in our gut can. Providing your microbiome with plenty of prebiotic fibre encourages the natural balance of bacterial strains in your gut. This in turn promotes overall wellbeing. Scientists believe that gut health affects our overall wellbeing,  immunity and even our mental health.More on gut health and immunity >>

Do I need a beta-glucans supplement?

You can pick up a beta-glucans supplement from many health stores. However at Erbology we always encourage you to source your nutrients from healthy whole foods.

This is because you’ll have greater transparency over what you’re consuming. You can  also make sure the products you use don’t contain any added starch or fillers. This is particularly relevant for medicinal mushroom supplements.

Rather than taking a supplement, we prefer to use our range of medicinal mushrooms. They are all whole food powders, containing 100% mushroom and nothing else.

Our Organic Cordyceps Powder offers an astonishing 47% beta-glucans, while our Organic Lion’s Mane Powder contains 32%.

Cordyceps is the right choice for you if you’re interested in supporting your immunity along with energy and athletic performance. Meanwhile, Lion’s Mane is right for you if you’re interested in immunity, focus and balanced mood.
