Foods that give you energy

Whether you’re looking for the best pre-workout foods or simply foods that give energy and stamina throughout the day, healthy energising foods have one thing in common. They have to provide you with glucose.

Glucose is the sugar which provides energy for your cells. You get it by eating carbohydrates, which your body then breaks down into simple sugars such as glucose.

However, you need to make sure that the energy is provided in a slow and steady stream. This is because you want to keep your energy up over a period of time, and avoid any ‘sugar crashes’ which occur when too much glucose rushes into your bloodstream.

Slow and steady

The way to ensure a steady flow of energy is to consume complex carbohydrates which take a while for the body to break down.

These include vegetarian foods such as whole grains, nuts and seeds and low-GI fruit and vegetables.

Luckily, these ingredients are just what we use to create our range of healthy snacks and powders!

Go low GI

Low GI foods are those which have a low ‘glycemic index’. This is a measure of how much they raise your blood sugar levels after you eat them.

If a food has a very high GI, it means you get a big rush of sugar which is often followed by a ‘crash’; feeling tired, grumpy and lethargic. On the other hand, low GI foods supply a steady stream of energy which allows you to keep on walking, working or dancing as long as you like.

Most whole grains and some fruit and vegetables are naturally low GI – another good reason to add them to your diet. All of our snacks, including our crackers, energy balls and granola, are low or low-medium GI.
