Does pumpkin seed oil contain Cucurbitacin?

3 years agoUpdated

Ornamental and wild pumpkins contain the bitter substance cucurbitacin, the oral intake of which can lead to stomach upset, nausea and vomiting. Cucurbitacin was successfully bred from cultivated pumpkins. Even if the seeds have a tendency to produce toxins, only the pulp is risky. Pumpkin seeds do not contain cucurbitacin, so there is no risk of poisoning when consuming pumpkin seed oil or nibbling the seeds.
