Alkalising kiwi, mango, mint and milk thistle smoothie recipe
This is an absolute tropical delight that will give lots of love to your skin, invigorate your senses and alkalise your body. Alka what? Before we have a chat about what makes this blend so darn good, let's talk about the alkaline balance and why it's so important.
Your body functions at its best when the pH level is between 7.35 and 7.45, which is slightly alkaline. When the body shifts out of this range, it will try and get back to the equilibrium and may do so by drawing nutrients from your bones and muscles. This can result in cellular damage and fatigue. Alkaline balance contributes to better sleep, energy boost, healthy bones, improved immunity and stomach function among the others. And guess what, mangos and kiwis are the superstars when it comes to helping your body achieve alkaline balance.
Mango, Kiwi, Mint and Milk Thistle
Mango and kiwifruit make this smoothie pleasantly sweet and slightly tart, while mint leaves give it a fresh, aromatic flavour that will get all your senses a nice boost.
I love taking nutrients in their purest form. No to pills and capsules, yes to fresh fruit, veggies and cold-pressed oils. Adding cold-pressed oils into smoothies is a great way to draw all their phytonutrients and omegas, while enjoying the taste of the drink.
This smoothie is enriched with organic virgin milk thistle oil. Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a beautiful plant with purple flowers and pale green leaves with white veins. In traditional medicine, the seeds of milk thistle have been used for centuries as a body cleanser and antioxidant. Milk thistle oil is extracted from the seeds and is high in phytonutrients, linoleic acid (omega 6 fatty acid) and skin-loving vitamin E.
Pump up your skin with vitamins E and C
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent free radical damage in body tissues. Because it is dissolved in fat, vitamin E penetrates cell membranes and protects them from oxidative stress and acts as an anti-aging mechanism.
Cold-pressed milk thistle oil is a perfect addition to mango, kiwis and mint. All three ingredients are high in vitamin C. This recipe includes 2 kiwis, 1 mango and a handful of fresh mint leaves. That is around 4 times RDA of vitamin C.
Back to the skin, vitamin C is essential for the synthesis of collagen, which is the main structural protein responsible for skin elasticity and regeneration, as well as healthy bones, muscles and tendons. As we age, our body naturally slows down collagen production. That's why, eating foods rich in vitamin C helps rejuvenate the skin and reduce signs of ageing.
