As we get older, looking after our hearts is a more common concern for many of us. So, what changes can we make in our diets to support a healthy heart?
The best thing you can do for your heart health is to eat a balanced, healthy diet full of whole grains, fruit and vegetables. These all contain antioxidants which fight free radical damage.
Try the Mediterranean diet
A Mediterranean diet, which features all of the above plus healthy fats such as olive oil, is particularly associated with heart health.
Essential fatty acids (omegas 3 and 6) also play a role in keeping your heart healthy. You can find these in cold-pressed plant oils, such as our Organic Walnut Oil.
Watching your cholesterol?
If you’re concerned about your cholesterol levels, it’s a good idea to cut down on saturated fat and include unsaturated fats in your diet instead.
For example, processed foods (especially processed meats) tend to be high in saturated fats. Meanwhile, foods made with nuts, seeds and vegetables contain the healthier unsaturated kinds.
You should aim to completely avoid a certain type of fat called ‘trans fat’, which is found only in highly processed foods.
