Bergamot orange
There are actually two plants which go by the name of bergamot. One is a herb and member of the mint family. However, here at Erbology we’re interested in the second kind: the citrus fruit.
Bergamot oranges are small, knobbly citrus fruits which look like a cross between a lemon and a lime. However, their flavor is closer to bitter orange. They have a sharp, refreshing taste. The juice is more bitter than commercial orange juice, but not as tart as lemon.
More than a fragrance
Bergamot is prized for its aromatic qualities, which have made it very popular in perfumery. Many of your favorite fragrances will likely contain bergamot essential oil. However, those who only prize its fragrance are missing out on bergamot’s other special qualities.
As a citrus fruit, bergamot is high in vitamin C which is vital for a healthy immune system, and for making collagen, the protein which keeps our skin plump and bouncy.
Drinking bergamot juice
Bergamot has a sharp citrus flavor. If you love grapefruit, lime and lemon, you will enjoy its natural flavor on its own. However, if it’s too tart for you, it’s easy to mix with other flavors.
We love to mix it with orange juice or add it to our smoothies. But it’s also a versatile cooking ingredient, perfect for swapping in for lemon or lime when making dressings and drizzles. Try it in a salad dressing for a light and refreshing flavor.
