Never a better time for wellness
We’ll be honest; when New Year’s Eve 2020 rolled around, and the clock finally ticked over into a brand new year, we felt a huge sigh of relief. 2020 was, let’s face it, one of the toughest years on record.
We’ve survived a whole extra year since then, and it’s definitely true that 2021 brought with it a greater sense of optimism. However, it has still been difficult, with lots of us dealing with the aftermath of the pandemic.
That’s why it has never been a better time to focus on the things that make us feel good. And, with Christmas just around the corner, we’ve been collecting ideas for the best health and wellness gifts you can give to your loved ones.
Christmas gifts for mum and dad
Although they’re probably the people we know best in the world, it can sometimes be bafflingly difficult to pick a gift for our parents.
First of all, it can seem as though they’ve developed their hobbies and interests over time, and have probably already accumulated any paraphernalia they need. What else can we add?
Or, perhaps it seems as though we’ve already run through the usual list of ‘parent present ideas’; a nice new sweater for Dad, some earrings for Mum…
However, choosing a wellness-related gift encourages the recipient to focus on the ‘here and now’. Enjoying a bit more time for self-care is something that everybody can benefit from, and makes a present which is both thoughtful and useful.
So, without further ado, here are our favourite wellness-related Christmas gifts for mum and dad.
1. A light therapy lamp
Christmas is one of our favourite times of year. However, the grey months of January and February which follow can be one of the most difficult, especially if you find your moods are affected by the weather.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression which appears during the cold, dark winter months. Light therapy lamps (sometimes also called SAD lamps) are a method of treatment which works by mimicking the lighter conditions of the summer months.
However, there are also versions available which have multiple uses, including gently waking you up with gradually increasing light, or playing relaxing colours and sounds.
We love this idea as it’s one both Mum and Dad can use. Whether it’s for its therapy potential or merely to help brighten up their home in the winter, a light therapy lamp is a great investment which can be used for many years to come.
We like the look of this Lumie model, which is stylish as well as functional.
2. A photo collage of you and your family
The pandemic has kept us apart from our loved ones over the last couple of years. A beautiful photo collage of you and your family will boost Mum and Dad’s spirits and provide them with a lovely decoration for their home.
Firstly, choose a gorgeous frame which you can customise with your favourite prints.
We love this frame set from Shared Earth which is made from sustainably sourced wood. It’s also FSC certified, which means that the Forest Stewardship Council has made sure its production doesn’t damage the environment.
Next, use an online printing service such as Pixum to get your favourite snaps printed and sent to you via post. Pixum uses FSC certified materials too, and the company is carbon-neutral.
Put the two together and you have a brilliant, personal gift which your parents will love, and which uses thoughtful and sustainable materials.
Include pics of the kids, family gatherings, birthday parties – whatever you like. But don’t be shy to include pictures of yourself. After all, yours is the face your parents most want to see!
3. Erbology Ayurvedic Adaptogens Bundle
A great way to encourage more self-care into your parents’ routines is to introduce them to the teachings of Ayurveda.
This ancient Indian medical system focuses on treating the body and mind as a whole. What’s more, it is concerned with taking preventative actions to keep the body healthy and happy before any signs of illness emerge.
As such, Ayurvedic teachings can be a great way to get your parents thinking about their wellbeing as part of their normal daily routine.
Our Ayurvedic Adaptogens Gift Set is a great way to introduce Mum and Dad to the basics of Ayurveda in an accessible and easy to use way.
In addition to this, amla and turmeric are famed for their free-radical-fighting properties. In fact, amla has one of the highest antioxidant capacities of any fruit!(1)
Meanwhile, ashwagandha is revered in Ayurveda as a natural sleep aid and stress-buster.
They can be easily mixed into a little warm water or milk and enjoyed in the morning or evening as desired. Alternatively, direct them to our adaptogen recipes for more delicious drinks.
"A great way to encourage more self-care into your parents’ routines is to introduce them to the teachings of Ayurveda."
4. An aromatherapy diffuser
Let your parents turn their home into an oasis of calm with an aromatherapy diffuser.
An interesting study found that patients in intensive care had better quality sleep and lower anxiety levels when treated with aromatherapy.
Anecdotally speaking, it’s also easy to recognise the soothing effects of walking into a beautifully scented room and breathing deeply.
While you can use candles or incense sticks to achieve this, we love the additional functionality offered by a diffuser.
You simply add water to a little well inside the diffuser and drop in a small amount of your favourite essential oil. You can also experiment with blending different oils to find your favourite relaxing scent.
Then, plug it in and allow the fragrance to fill the room as you relax with a book or cup of herbal tea.
We rather like this model from Neom Organics, as it also features a timer, LED light, and acts as a humidifier as well.
5. Erbology Immunity Bundle
Immunity is a hot topic at the moment for obvious reasons. While foods can’t stop you getting any particular disease, they can help provide the nutrients your immune system needs to function properly.
In our Immunity Foods Gift Set, we’ve selected three of our bestselling products for immunity. To do this, we used a blend of modern science and ancient wisdom.
For example, we included our Organic Bergamot Shots for their high content of vitamin C. Not only is it an antioxidant, which can help protect you from oxidative stress, but vitamin C plays a key role in your immune system. It influences phagocytosis, which is the process by which certain immune cells identify and gobble up invading germs.(3)
Next, we added our Organic Black Seed Oil. This is revered in traditional Middle Eastern cultures as a cure-all for various ailments. However, modern scientific research has revealed that it contains several special compounds with antimicrobial properties, including thymoquinone..(4)
Finally, we include our Organic Immunity Mushroom Blend Powder. This blend of eight powerful medicinal mushrooms contains beta-glucans, a special type of polysaccharide. Beta-glucans have been shown to stimulate an immune reaction.(5) Medicinal mushrooms have also been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years thanks to their healing properties.
6. Sustainable luxury bed linen
There’s nothing better than sliding into a bed with luxurious new sheets. Treat your mum and dad to some delightfully fancy ones made with sustainable materials.
Cotton is such a ubiquitous material that many of us take it for granted. It makes our clothes, bedding, bags and towels, yet the impact of our demand for cotton is astronomical.
According to the WWF, cotton production involves around 7% of the entire labour force of developing nations.(5) Unfortunately, the way most cotton is made is unsustainable, leading to soil erosion, pollution and water contamination.
Fortunately, there are a couple of companies out there turning this around. For example, we love Lily and Mortimer’s ‘Dreamers’ duvet cover set. Not only is it gorgeous to look at, it’s made with organic, Fairtrade cotton.
Even better, the company also gives back to initiatives which empower local communities in India. So, not only is this a thoughtful gift for Mum and Dad, they’ll also rest easy knowing it came from a responsible source.
7. Good ideas for the garden
Do you have a green-fingered parent? Whether the garden is the pride and joy of Mum, Dad or both, their little patch of the great outdoors is a great opportunity to reconnect with nature.
While they may not be spending much of the winter lounging outside in a hammock, there’s still plenty of things they can do while the weather is cold.
If your parents are comfortable with a certain amount of tech, we love these bird feeders with cameras from Green Feathers.
Simply install the bird box in the garden and connect the camera up to your parents’ smartphones or tablets. They’ll soon be able to watch as feathered visitors come to feed!
A guide to local wildlife would be a great addition to this gift, so they can identify the birds they have spotted.
A gardening project is also a great option, if your Mum and Dad can’t wait for spring so they can start planting!
The wintry weather may prevent long stints spent outside, but what about an indoor gardening project? We love this clever kit which allows you to grow your own oyster mushrooms.
Not only do your parents get to eat the fruits of their labour, but the mushrooms grow on sustainably-minded spent coffee grounds. An ideal indoor activity to scratch that gardening itch.
